Join our EcoCultural Fire Crew
Join TERA’s EcoCultural Fire Crew,
and burn with us from October 2023 to June 2024!
Applications accepted on a rolling basis
As part of the Lake County Cal-TREX, our on-call EcoCultural Fire Crew works to return cultural burning and prescribed fire to our ancestral lands.
If you’re unfamiliar with TREX, PLEASE READ THE OVERVIEW OF THE LAKE CAL-TREX.
Members of our EcoCultural Fire Crew are strongly encouraged to participate in 3 or more of the pre-scheduled burn windows (listed below) and will also have the opportunity to sign up for additional dates as favorable burn windows emerge through June 2024. Crew Members will assist with preparing, scouting, briefing, igniting, holding, fire effects monitoring, mop-up, and patrol on prescribed and cultural burns. In the event that conditions are not favorable for live fire on some of the pre-scheduled dates, we will conduct trainings that will build our capacity to implement ecoculturally oriented burns. Examples of training topics include FEMO (Fire Effects Monitoring), Securing the Fireline, EcoCultural Prep Work, and much more!
How it works:
Apply to participate in the EcoCultural Fire Crew (application below)
Put the dates listed below in your calendar to hold for possible burning - and remember that Mother Nature is ultimately in charge of when we can burn.
If accepted to the EcoCultural Fire Crew, attend the Oct 17-18 Tactical Fire Training
If you are only interested in burning and this training, and not attending other pre-fire training, you just need to apply for the EcoCultural Fire Crew. Otherwise, please also complete the pre-fire training application.
EcoCultural Fire Crew members will receive an email before each set of scheduled burn days to let you know if
1) we’re aiming for live fire
2) no live fire, but we will host a training or
3) nothing will be happening on the dates
Here are the dates we’ve set aside:
Oct 19-20, Thursday-Friday
Nov 1-2, Wednesday-Thursday
Nov 15-16, Wednesday-Thursday
Nov 28-29, Tuesday-Wednesday
Dec 16-17, Saturday-Sunday
Jan 12-13, Friday-Saturday
Feb 28-29, Wednesday-Thursday
March 25-26, Monday-Tuesday
April 12-13, Friday-Saturday
May 8-9, Wednesday-Thursday
June 12-13, Wednesday-Thursday
In addition to these dates, we will also schedule burns outside of these days when conditions and windows are favorable. We are hoping to have at least 15-20 days of live fire from October 2023 - June 2024.
We highly encourage (but do not require) all those interested in participating in our EcoCultural Fire Crew to complete their Firefighter Type 2 qualification. You can complete your Firefighter Type 2 coursework online. You will still need to attend a field day and complete the pack test and shelter deployment to qualify as a FFT2.
We will be offering the opportunity to take a pack test and shelter deployment during our RT-130 (Sept 23) and during the Tactical Drills Training (Oct 17-18). Space is limited, so the ability to complete these requirements through us is not guaranteed. Please let us know if you are interested in doing your coursework online and fulfilling these additional requirements with us by emailing asagala@tribalecorestoration.org.
Applications are currently being accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis.
If you are accepted to the on-call EcoCultural Fire Crew, we will request further information. Please do not send any copies of certifications until we request them from you.
If you have questions about the training, please call (707) 278-8019 or Contact Us Via Email.
