Register for TERA’s S290 - Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior
As part of the 2023-24 Lake County EcoCultural TREX (Prescribed Fire and Cultural Burning Training Exchange), the Tribal EcoRestoration Alliance (TERA) will be offering an in-person S290 - Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior NWCG-certified course led by The Watershed Research and Training Center and the Tribal EcoRestoration Alliance with support from guest instructors.
DATES: Monday - Thursday, June 10 - 13, 2024
LOCATION: Upper Lake, CA
TIME: 0830 - 1700 each day
In this course, you will learn to:
Identify and describe the characteristics of fuels, weather, and topography that influence wildland fire behavior.
Describe the interaction of fuels, weather, and topography on wildland fire behavior, fireline tactics, and safety.
Describe the causes of extreme fire behavior conditions (long range spotting, crowning, and fire whirls) that develop due to weather, fuels, and/or topography.
Interpret, communicate, apply, and document wildland fire behavior and weather information.
This course is required for NWCG qualification as a Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO) as well as a prerequisite for California State-Certified Burn Boss (CARX) qualification.
Prerequisites:
In order to participate in this course, you must have the following minimum training and experience:
Completed your basic wildland firefighter (FFT2) training, including S-190 Introduction to Fire Behavior (if you completed Basic 32 through the Lake TREX, you have completed this requirement). If you have not taken S-190, you can do so online through the Wildland Fire Learning Portal.
Participated in 3 or more prescribed or cultural burns
Once accepted into the course, you will be required to email a scanned copy of your S-190 certificate to confirm your spot in the course.
Application timeline:
Applications open April 3-30
Notification of acceptance by May 15
Course takes place Monday-Thursday June 10-13. Full participation in all days of the course is required to receive a certificate.
Participation in this course is by application, with priority acceptance for Tribal members from Lake, Mendocino, and Sonoma Counties. Individuals from all backgrounds are welcome to apply.
